I’ve lifted the lid on a pretty terrarium and been hit with a whiff of swamp. I’ve also smelled sweet soil that told me everything inside was balanced. Odour is the quickest health check a terrarium gives you, and you don’t need any tools to read it. In this guide, I explain what each common…
I learned the hard way that a terrarium doesn’t die while you’re gone — it dies in the week before you leave. I used to water “just in case,” move it to a darker shelf, and cross my fingers. Now I plan a simple routine that keeps the glass jungle stable for 2–6 weeks without…
I remember staring at my first air plant “family” wondering if those tiny side shoots were a win or a warning. A month later, the mother browned at the base, the pups stalled, and I learned the hard way what to cut, when to cut, and when to leave things alone. In this guide, I’ll…
I’ve rebuilt more terrariums than I care to admit because succulent leaves kept dropping overnight while the plants looked otherwise healthy. When you see plump leaves on the soil like confetti, you’re not dealing with disease — you’re dealing with physics inside glass. In this guide I’ll show you the four mechanical causes that knock…
I built my first moss terrarium with a handful I pulled from a shady curb strip. It looked perfect for two weeks, then tiny centipedes and a gray fuzz took over. Since then I’ve sourced moss the right way — legally, cleanly, and with far fewer surprises. In this guide I’ll show you exactly how…
I’ve built more terrariums than I can count, and I’ve also watched a few turn into foggy, moldy messes on friends’ coffee tables. The common thread: confusion between preserved moss and live moss. Once you know how each behaves with humidity, how long it lasts, and how it fails, you’ll stop guessing and start getting…
I added springtails after my first moss bowl turned into a fuzzy white science experiment. Within a week the smell vanished, the mold receded, and the glass stayed clearer between wipes. If your terrarium feels like it’s fighting you with fungus and gnats, you’re missing its cleanup crew. I’ll show you what springtails actually do,…
I ruined my first “self-sustaining” terrarium by packing in fancy soils and skipping the cleanup crew. Three weeks later, fungus gnats and a sour smell told me everything I needed to know. Since then, I’ve dialed in a simple, repeatable substrate that stays springy, drains well, and supports a thriving microfauna community. You’ll learn the…
I lost my first two Vfts (Venus flytraps) on a bright kitchen counter that looked perfect to me and deadly to them. I watered when the soil looked dry, used “nice” potting mix, and gave them a sunny window — and they still dwindled. Once I learned the three things these plants refuse to compromise…
I’ve repotted hundreds of houseplants on a small apartment balcony, and I used to think “bigger pot, happier plant.” Then I watched a thriving pothos stall for six months in a pot the size of a salad bowl, while a jade sulked and dropped leaves in a cramped nursery cup. Pot size isn’t cosmetic ….
